I want a new toy.

I’m a complete media whore.

1000 CD’s, more than 20,000 mp3’s, 200 DVD’s and several dozen full length DivX and mpg movies.

I’m constantly surrounded by media, and I absorb it without barriers.

Our current batch of portable, media friendly hardware, sucks ass though. I’m looking for something simple, and I have spent a few weeks, and countless searches on google, to no avail.

What I want, is pretty simple.

  • 80 gigs, or greater storage, or…
  • Expandable Memory via SD, Mini SD, or TransFlash.
  • 3″ or larger 16*9 screen.
  • FM Radio and Transmitter with internal antenna.
  • A2DP Bluetooth. Cables are a drag.
  • DivX, XviD and MP3.
  • No touch screen. Hello finger prints.
  • No Windows Mobile. It drives me nuts.
  • 6+ Hours of media playback, please.
  • No proprietary software. Drag and Drop via USB Mass Storage please.
  • No DRM. At the very least, allow me to play DRM free files. I rip about 90% of my own media, and playback on my Debian laptop is very important.
  • Wi-Fi, for media transfers from my server via Samba, would kick ass.
  • If I can get it as an unlocked GSM smartphone, all the better. Only if it supports BES though.

Right now, I am using my laptop as a portable media player. It goes literally everything that want it to, but a 14″ screen is overkill, the battery life is miserable, and the entire bag of accessories that I need to carry with me just to support it ruin the convenience aspect of what I want.

I have a feeling, that what I just asked for, is basically what the Second Gen Apple iPhone is going to be, other than I don’t want a touch screen. Hell, we might even get all those features in the first gen, but I’ll be very hard pressed to lay down the kind of cash that Apple is going to want for that particular piece of hardware, and as awesome as MultiTouch looks, it’s just not what I want.

The search continues.
